Former NPC deputy Ng Hong-mun dies at 100

Oct 18, 2026

Former SAR deputy to the National People's Congress and longtime principal of Pui Kiu Middle School, Ng Hong-mun, has passed away at the age of 100. He had been a member of the national legislature from 1975 to 2008, first as a Guangdong deputy before representing the SAR from 1997. Ng served as the principal of Pui Kiu Middle School from 1958 to 1985, before taking over as its supervisor until 1996. He then went on to be the director of the school management board from 1997 to 2004. He helped found the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers in 1975 and served as its founding president. In addition, he served on the Preparatory Committee for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Basic Law Committee. In a statement, Chief Executive John Lee expressed his sadness over Ng's death. Lee said Ng made important contributions to Hong Kong's return to the motherland as well as its long-term prosperity and stability. "He dedicated his life to patriotic education and had cultivated a wealth of outstanding talent for the country and Hong Kong. He was an extraordinary educationalist with remarkable contributions," the CE added in his statement. Writing on social media, former chief executive and now vice-chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, CY Leung, also expressed his deepest condolences following Ng's passing. _____________________________ Last updated: 2026-10-18 HKT 17:55 Edited by Edmond Fong

Huanggang busy on first long weekend travel rush

Oct 18, 2026

Secretary for Security Chris Tang on Sunday said authorities have stepped up on-site management at the Huanggang port to cope with higher passenger traffic. This came as the redeveloped port saw crowds at its departure hall heading into its first travel peak – the long Chung Yeung Festival weekend. The Security Bureau noted that the port was busiest between 1pm and 2pm with more than 9,700 departures – nearly nine times more than previously. During the peak, travellers needed to wait for 30 to 45 minutes for crowd diversion arrangements on the second floor of the port building, and within 30 minutes at the departure hall on the fifth floor, it said. The bureau said departure traffic began to ease from 2pm. Writing on his social media page, Tang said the port had seen an "obvious" rise in passenger traffic. He called on cross-border travellers to follow the instructions of on-site staff members and register for the automated channels in advance for faster crossings. Tang added that people should plan their trip early and avoid crossing the border during peak hours. The Immigration Department, for its part, said outbound passenger traffic was heavy between 10am and 2pm on Sunday, with departures topping 30,000. The department said it had deployed extra manpower and opened all clearance channels and counters to cope with the crowds. _____________________________ Last updated: 2026-10-18 HKT 18:41 Edited by Edmond Fong
